Meeting Minutes – October 10 – 12, 2008 Blockade Runner, Wrightsville Beach, NC

Friday, October 10, 2008:
The Commission met for dinner at 7:00 PM and heard a presentation by Commission Member Brian Freeman about his Fulbright trip to Japan.
Saturday, October 11, 2008:
Carolyn Williams, Commission Chair, called the meeting to order at 9:00 AM and welcomed all in attendance. After introductions, the Commission reviewed the proposed agenda for the meeting. Jack Hoke moved that the agenda be accepted as amended and Felicia Eybl seconded the motion. Motion carried.
Eric Hirsch, Director of Special Projects at the New Teacher Center, Santa Cruz, and Andrew Sioberg, mentor for Durham Public Schools, shared some of the preliminary results of the 2008 NC Teacher Working Conditions Survey, with a focus on mentoring. The mentoring standards were also discussed.
After the lunch break, election of officers for 2008-2009 was held with the following results:
Carolyn Williams – re-elected as Chair Dave Corsetti – re-elected as Vice Chair Keri Randolph – elected as Secretary/Treasurer Jack Hoke – elected as Member at Large

The minutes from the previous meeting were not available and will be reviewed at the next meeting. The budget for the Commission is in the process of being posted by DPI. Jack Hoke moved to delay the budget report/approval until the next meeting. Dave Corsetti seconded the motion. Motion passed.
Carolyn McKinney reported on the upcoming Real D.E.A.L. conference. Commission members are invited to the dinner on Wednesday night (December 3) and to Teacher Working Conditions portion and Awards Luncheon on Thursday (December 4).
The Commission discussed meeting dates for 2009. The Commission will hold the next meeting concurrent with the January State Board Meeting. The Commission will meet for dinner on 1/6/09; attend the Twenty-First Century Personnel Committee Meeting on 1/7/09 and the State Board Meeting o n 1/8/09. Another meeting was tentatively scheduled for the weekend of May 1 and 2, 2009 – the location to be determined at a later time.

Carolyn Williams, Commission Chair, called the meeting to order at 9:00 AM.
Teresa Smith of DPI presented a draft of the Standards for Counselors and Social Workers for the Commission to review.
Donna Simmons (Commission Member) briefly reviewed the Revised Teacher Education Specialty Area Standards with the Commission.
Dave Corsetti, Commission Vice Chair, conducted the meeting evaluation:
PLUS: Candy, good conversations and sharing, the work was done and completed within the timeframe, Brian Freeman’s presentation was excellent, presentations from the guests (Teresa Smith, Eric Hirsch, and Andrew Sioberg) were all informative, nice to have an opportunity to bring along families.
DELTAS: The Friday dinner service was understaffed and some of the entrees were not cooked correctly; rainy weather.
